Description

White silk ribbon is stamped with an image and text in red, black, and blue ink. Two circular portraits of Benjamin Harrison and Levi P. Morton are centered on the ribbon. An American flag curtain is pulled back and tacked to the proper right side of the ribbon. "Protection of American Labor" is printed at the bottom. Part of The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum. Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901), grandson of Indiana Territorial Governor and 9th President of the United States, William Henry Harrison, was born in North Bend, Ohio and moved to Indianapolis to practice law in 1854. After leading the 70th Indiana Infantry through the Atlanta Campaign during the Civil War, General Harrison served as U.S. Senator from Indiana from 1881-1888. While he lost the popular vote to Grover Cleveland in 1888, Harrison was chosen as president by the Electoral College. Noted for protectionist trade policies, creation of the National Forest system, and an active and modern foreign policy, Harrison lost his bid in 1892 for re-election to Grover Cleveland and returned to his legal practice in Indianapolis.
