Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth (c.1797–1883) lectured on abolition, racial equality, and women’s rights. After escaping slavery in New York, she sued to free her son and became the first Black woman to win a court case against a white man. In 1850 she published her book, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth. During the Civil War she helped recruit Black troops for the Union and worked for the National Freedman's Relief Association in Washington, D.C., where she met President Lincoln at the White House in 1864.
