Rebecca Pomroy
Rebecca Pomroy (1817–1884) was an army nurse throughout the war. After Willie Lincoln’s death, President Lincoln requested a nurse to care for Tad, who was still sick with typhoid, and Mary Lincoln, who was left prostrate by Willie’s death. Pomroy was sent. Lincoln, grateful for Pomroy’s skill and support, told her, “Tell your grandchildren how indebted the nation was to you in holding up my hands in time of trouble.”
