A Sympathy Letter from John Lothrop Motley
As the funeral train carried Lincoln to his final resting place in Springfield, his widow, Mary Lincoln, remained secluded in the White House. She received condolence letters from around the world, including this one from John Lothrop Motley, Ambassador to the Austrian Empire. In this five-page letter, Motley explains that Lincoln was beloved around the world and is mourned by all Americans; there is horror “felt throughout the civilized world” at the loss of a great man.
