National Day of Mourning
June 1, 1865, was designated a National Day of Mourning by proclamation of President Andrew Johnson. Citizens were encouraged to gather together at their houses of worship to contemplate the life of Abraham Lincoln and mourn his tragic death. One such gathering was held by the Union League of Providence, Rhode Island, at City Hall, to remember “the martyr to the cause of liberty.” This broadside announces the day’s events, culminating in a eulogy delivered by abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison.
