In Fort Wayne, Indiana, as in countless small cities and towns, Black Easter sermons were preached. There, Rev. John M. Lowrie of First Presbyterian Church solemnly exhorted his congregation to learn the lessons of the nation’s tragedy—to remember the frailty and depravity of man, to recognize the rule of God, and to remember that their own lives and accomplishments could be cut off as abruptly as Lincoln’s had been.
