Johnston Surrenders to Sherman
General Joseph Johnston, leading Confederate commander in the Carolinas, surrendered to General William Sherman in Durham, North Carolina, in late April. Days of negotiations based on Lee’s surrender to Grant ultimately led to the largest surrender of Confederate forces on April 26, 1865.
