The Final Battle at Appomattox

After a week of skirmishes, Grant and Lee led their troops into a final battle at Appomattox Court House on April 8. Lee prepared to attack again the next day, but was closed in by Union reinforcements. The Union had won. After a series of notes passed between Grant and Lee, the two men agreed to meet on the morning of April 9 to discuss Lee’s surrender.
