The National Lincoln Monument
On July 16, 1882, Mary Todd Lincoln suffered a stroke and died in her sister’s home in Springfield, Illinois. She was sixty-three years old. Her son Robert and her sister Elizabeth organized her funeral, following Mary’s instructions. A private viewing was held in the Edwardses' parlor. Mary was dressed in white silk. Mary's casket was then placed in the Lincoln National Monument in Oak Ridge Cemetery, alongside sons Eddie, Willie, and Tad. Two days later, on July 21, 1882, members of the Lincoln Guard of Honor moved her casket to rest next to her husband's remains in the basement of the monument.
