Robert Todd Lincoln
Robert Todd Lincoln was not as close to his mother as his younger brother Tad was, yet he always strove to be the perfect and dutiful son. Having attended Harvard University and established himself as a respected Chicago lawyer, Robert acted as he believed was proper to ensure his mother's best interests. In 1875, Mary’s sanity appeared to further deteriorate, and Robert felt forced to take action. He initiated a public jury trial to have her declared insane, and the Cook County Court did so on May 19, 1875.
