Return To The Emancipation Proclamation

President Lincoln, Writing the Proclamation of Freedom, January 1st, 1863
The artist made use of much symbolism in this illustration of Lincoln writing the proclamation such as the railsplitter's maul on the floor, the bust of Buchanan hanging by a cord around the neck, the uneven scales behind the desk, Lincoln's left hand on the Bible, and the draped flag at the window. The title of this chromolithograph implies that Lincoln wrote the Proclamation on January 1st, 1863, when in fact, he merely signed the final copy on that day putting it into effect.
