Emancipation Proclamation Issued January 1st, 1863

Printmakers designed a variety of “calligraphic” prints of the Emancipation Proclamation intended to be hung in parlors. Notice that the lithographer of this print engraved Lincoln’s head on the much smaller body of John C. Fremont which had been engraved earlier thus making it quicker to get the new print on the market.
