Harkin Mummy Exhibition
This photospread from Life Magazine provides a glimpse into the Harkin’s mummy exhibition. Joseph “Barney” Harkin collects the twenty-five cent admission, while his wife Agnes shows the mummy at every angle to customers. The Harkins joined with the Jay Gould Million Dollar Show in 1937. Eventually, the Harkins lost touch with Gould, but he kept the mummy and continued to show it. Following Gould’s ownership, the mummy is harder to track and there seems only to be rumors of its whereabouts after the late 1930’s. In the 1960’s, C.P. Fox, general manager of Circus World Museum in Wisconsin, contacted Gould to see if he could use the mummy in his museum. By then, Gould had long lost ownership of the Booth mummy. Fox continued trying to track it, but only ever heard whisperings of its location.
