Tom Thumb's Family
On February 13, 1863, the smallest man and the greatest man of the nation met when Charles S. Stratton visited the White House. Stratton, who was more famously known as General Tom Thumb because he stood only 31 inches high, was invited to a private reception in Washington after a lavish wedding to his 30-inch-tall bride, Lavinia Warren, known as Lady. The “little couple” was greeted by 50 guests and enjoyed cake and champagne.
