President Lincoln's Grand Reception at the Ballroom, 1865
A public reception was held on March 4, 1865, at the White House for the President’s second inauguration. People stampeded to the event, causing there to be a carriage jam three-quarters of a mile long. The reception started at 8:00 p.m. and took place in the East Room while the Marine Band played. President Lincoln shook hands with over 6,000 people, causing White House staff to decide that from now on tickets would be sold to make such events more exclusive.
