Death Bed of the Martyr President Abraham Lincoln
Eighteen dignitaries appear in this lithograph, also published by Currier & Ives, including Gen. Henry Halleck, Gen. Montgomery Meigs, Vice President Andrew Johnson, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Postmaster General William Dennison, House Speaker Schuyler Colfax, Senator Charles Sumner, Chief Justice Salmon Chase, Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch, and Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. An unidentified “surgeon”—probably Dr. Charles Leale—sits beside Lincoln’s bed. Robert stands weeping behind him. Clara Harris, Mary Lincoln, and Tad have been relegated to the hallway, just visible through the door. The clock on the back wall reads 7:22, the time of Lincoln’s death. Again, this image is a composite of men who visited the dying president, and some of the men, including Johnson, were not in the room when Lincoln died. Mary also was not present—she had been banished to the front parlor because Stanton tired of her hysterical behavior. Tad, as already noted, was not at the Petersen House at all.
