Assassination of President Lincoln
After slashing Rathbone, Booth jumped to the stage, catching his spur in the flag draping the front of the box and breaking his leg as he hit the stage. There he faced the audience and shouted “Sic semper tyrannis!” before limping offstage and exiting the theater into the alley behind, where he retrieved his horse and escaped. This lithograph by an unknown artist depicts Booth, knife still in his hand, jumping from the presidential box as horrified members of the audience look on.
