Philadelphia Inquirer
Almost from the moment John Wilkes Booth leapt to the stage in Ford’s Theatre, national attention was riveted on the assassin, his escape, and the effort to capture him. This April 17, 1865, issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer dedicated virtually its entire news hole to recounting the assassination and its aftermath and providing information about the “dastard assassin.” An illustration of Booth and a map showing “The Murderer’s Way of Exit” from Ford’s Theatre dominate page one. Additional information on Booth and his escape is inside.
