Return To Lincoln in Cartoons: Through the Years

Worship of the North
This cartoon was published by Southern sympathizer Adalbert Johann Volck in 1863. It exaggerates the sentiments of abolitionists, Republicans, and Northern sympathizers. It depicts an elaborate scene of worship. Northern leaders are shown sacrificing a white man to a shrine of an African American. The man is seated on a throne labeled “Chicago Platform” after the Republican’s party platform, which has a bust of Lincoln on it. The shrine labeled "Negro Worship" is built upon the bricks of spirit rapping, free love, witch burning, socialism, atheism, rationalism, and puritanism. The cartoon is implying that Lincoln and the North do not just empathize with the African-American plight but worship African Americans.
