Lincoln in Cartoons: Through the Years: An Analysis of Abraham Lincoln in Political Cartoons

Lincoln in Cartoons

Political cartoons have been important in the history of America. They are used to illustrate a legacy someone has left behind or, most often, to take down politicians, promote certain issues, and criticize nations. Political cartoons have been featured in countless elections and offer political opinions on a country's most pressing issues. One problem with revisiting political cartoons from the past is that they are a product of their time, so in order to understand them they need to be contextualized. Abraham Lincoln was targeted and supported in countless political cartoons throughout his career and continued to be politicized after his death in later illustrations. This exhibit will look at the cartoons attacking and supporting Lincoln and his policies as well as look at how he has been politicized after his death.
