Maj. Gen. Osterhaus
Major General Peter J. Osterhaus (1823–1917) was born in Koblenz, Rhenish Prussia, and later immigrated to the United States in 1858, where he settled in St. Louis, Missouri. When the Civil War erupted, Osterhaus was appointed as a major in the 2nd Missouri Volunteer Infantry. In 1862, he was promoted to brigadier general and led troops throughout the Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and Atlanta campaigns. He was later mustered out of service in 1866 and was appointed as the U.S. consul in Lyons, France.
