Douglas und volks-souveränität : rede des Carl Schurz
German political involvement in the 1860 election of Abraham Lincoln was unprecedented. Votes of German American immigrants in the North were crucial for the Republican campaign. The “Douglas und Volks-Souveränität,” or “Douglas and Popular Sovereignty,” was a speech given by Carl Schurz on January 4, 1860, in support of the Republican Party and Abraham Lincoln. Schurz, as well as other German orators, broadcasted Republican opposition to slavery, successfully winning over numerous German American voters who held strong views against the practice.
