A Letter to Sherman
In 1864 controversy erupted over how Union soldiers would vote. Lincoln promoted the idea of the absentee ballot and realized the necessity of allowing the men in the field to vote. Lincoln also asked any general who could spare soldiers to allow them to return to their homes to vote. Abraham Lincoln sent this letter to General William T. Sherman urging him to allow his soldiers to return home so that they could vote.
