Horace Greeley
Horace Greeley (1811-1872) founded “The New York Tribune,” one of the nation’s leading newspapers, in 1841. During the war years, he was among a group of abolitionists who vacillated between criticism and praise of Lincoln. In a famous open letter to Lincoln published in the “Tribune,” Greeley called on the President to immediately abolish slavery as a necessary measure to save the Union.
