William Harlan Revisited
William long struggled with his health, specifically with recurring lung ailments, and moved west as an adult in the hope of finding a climate more suitable to his recovery. He eventually reached San Francisco, where he died in 1876 at age 23. That year, the 1872 photograph taken during his time in Washington was reprinted by the photographer, and William’s photograph was placed in the family collection for the final time.
