William Harlan in 1872
The last known photograph of William Harlan was taken by Julius Ulke in Washington in 1872, the year after Tad’s death. William was nineteen and had begun growing a moustache, enhanced in this photograph with the aid of a pencil. It was around this time that William worked as a page in the United States Senate, where his father served until 1873. As the notation on the reverse of the photograph indicates, this image has previously been misidentified not only as Tad Lincoln, but also as Abraham “Jack” Lincoln II, Robert Lincoln’s son and William Harlan’s nephew.
