Tad Lincoln in Frankfurt

On October 1, 1868, Tad and Mary Lincoln set sail for Europe from Baltimore. The pair spent nearly three years on the continent, traveling across England, Scotland, and Germany. Tad attended a boarding school in Frankfurt, Germany, in the months after their arrival, where this photograph was taken. This is the last photograph of Tad Lincoln known to exist, taken approximately two years before his death.
