Description

This woodcut engraving is the front page of the June 3, 1865, issue of Harper's Weekly. A drawing occupies the majority of the page. it features Jefferson Davis playing a game of chess with Uncle Sam. Davis is reportedly playing for his life (according to the column). He is wrapped in a long flowing garment, and wears a cap with a feather in it. He holds his hand to his mouth and appears nervous as he ponders his next move. Uncle Sam is well-dressed and appears cool and collected. A faint drawing of Liberty stands behind the table and between the two men, judging the game and nodding towards Uncle Sam.
