Description

This is a political cartoon taken from a French publication, "Le Charvari," page 170. It features two disheveled, middle-aged men exhanging "goods" with one another. According to the text below, the two men are Americans, one from the North, and one from the South. The "goods" that they are exchanging are presented in the form of ill-prepared soldiers. The Northern man pushes forward a small boy, in exchange for an elderly recruit from the Southern man. The following text appears below the title: Le Nord_Excusez ma novelle recrue, mais c'est tout ce qui me reste. Le Sud_Voila mon dernier volontaire, mais il est encore tres presentable. Translation: The Northern Man: Excuse my new recruit, but this is all I have left. The Southern Man: Here's my old volunteer, but he's still quite presentable.
