Description

This postcard features the granite monument at the grave of Ann Rutledge (1813-1835) in Oakland Cemetery at Petersburg, Illinois. The monument located at the head of the grave has a poem by Edgar Lee Masters engraved on it. Ann met Abraham Lincoln when he moved to New Salem in 1831. Oral tradition alleges that Abraham and Ann became romantically involved and that he was devastated when she died from typhoid fever in August of 1835.
