Description

This steel engraving was done from a photograph taken of President Abraham Lincoln and his youngest son, Tad, in February of 1865 in Washington, D. C. The scenic background was added to the photograph for artistic effect. In the photograph a small round table with a book and an inkwell on top is in the center. Tad is to the viewer's left standing next to the table with his left leg crossed over the right leg and with the fingers of his right hand hooked in his pocket. Tad is leaning on his left arm which he has placed on the table. President Lincoln is seated in a chair to the viewer's right with his right arm resting on the book on the table while holding another book in his hand. His left hand rests in his lap. The scenery added for artistic effect includes a pillar behind Tad and a drape behind the president. A fountain and trees and a sailing vessel are seen in the far background.
