Description
This steel engraving features the imagined Abraham Lincoln deathbed scene if all of the 46 visitors had been in the room at the same time. It is done after the original 1868 painting by Alonzo Chappel. A weeping Mrs. Lincoln is shown kneeling with her arms resting on the bed and head bowed. Their oldest son Robert is shown beside his mother with his head bowed and a handerchief held in his right hand. Vice President Andrew Johnson is shown seated at the viewer's left of the image. Cabinet members, military officers, and friends are shown standing in various positions around the bed. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
