Description
This etching is a political cartoon by Adalbert Volck, a Southern sympathizer living in Baltimore, Maryland, during the United States Civil War. This cartoon, one of the Confederate War Etchings series, depicts Federal troops overseeing the 1862 election. They are intimidating the respectable citizens attempting to vote while encouraging those of less reputable character. Unruly Unionist members of the crowd, at least some of whom appear to be Aftrican American, wave banners that say, "Union or Nothing" and "Hail Columbia--Happy Land!!!" The George Washington monument in Baltimore's Mount Vernon Place can be seen in the background. The number 9 appears just above the top left corner of the image. Original etching one of thirty published in Volck's "Confederate War Etchings." Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
