Description

This lithograph is a key to the persons shown in the painting by Alexander Hay Ritchie of the deathbed scene of President Abraham Lincoln in the Petersen house in Washington, D.C., early in the morning on April 15, 1865. It shows twenty-six people in various poses standing or seated around Lincoln's deathbed including Lincoln's cabinet members, the doctors, and other dignitaries. In reality the room was not large enough for nearly that many visitors. The painting was to be a record of the visitors during the night, not that they were all there at the same time. A photograph of the painting can be seen on the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection website.
