Description

This colored lithograph depicts an interior view of the Academy of Music as seen from the dress circle at the 1864 Brooklyn Sanitary Fair. The scene is captured from the darkened balcony seats gazing out upon a great hall festooned with red, white, and blue streamers and drapery. A large crowd mills about tables staged below on the ground level. The hall is open to an outdoor tent in the background. The print is titled in the bottom margin, "Brooklyn Sanitary Fair, 1864. Interior view of the Academy of Music as seen from the dress circle." The bottom left corner reveals an embossed stamp and writing in pencil, which is partially covered by the picture mat. The Academy of Music was the central attraction of the Brooklyn Sanitary Fair. In this building thousands of dollars worth of books, flowers, and fancy goods were sold to raise funds for the United States Sanitary Commission.
