Description

This engraving is a reprint of an engraving done by A.H. Ritchie in 1868 after a charcoal drawing by F.O.C. Darley. It depicts Sherman's "March to the Sea" where the Union general and his 62,000 troops embarked on an overland march through Atlanta and the Carolinas, destroying Confederate property and raiding the South's livestock and grain. The print features soldiers tearing up railroad tracks and telegraph poles. Behind them a house or barn burns. An African American family is watching as they walk by the soldiers. For more information on this print, see "The Union Image: Popular Prints of the Civil War North" by Neely and Holzer, page 228.
