Description

This broadside in newspaper format discusses the history of the Old Salem Chautauqua first held in August of 1899 just outside of Petersburg, Illinois, near the banks of the Sangamon River. It began on August 10 and continued through August 22 with speakers, entertainers, and musical artists performing each day. Chautauquas were an important event in the social life of that period. Photographs from previous year's chautauquas are included with the article which was published in the December 1, 1923, issue of "The Billboard.".
