- Handwritten speech, 34 cm., on blue and white lined paper, hand stitched between brown paper wrappers. Speech by William Mitchell (W.M.) Zearing delivered before a Chicago group in 1862 after his return from Washington, D.C., recounting his visit to Washington in the spring of 1861 at the start of the American Civil War. He describes his activities and participation in Cassius M. Clay's Battalion (also referred to as the Washington Clay Guards) between April 18 and 29, 1861, and reflects on the 1st Battle of Bull Run (Manassas), sites of Washington, and the rebellion. Docketed on back wrapper with date and title.
