Title supplied by cataloger.; Handwritten letter dated "Camp near Fort Urmston, October 29th 1864," addressed to "Dear Friend, Uncle Samuel," and signed "yours most truly, From J.O. Wilson." Fort Urmston was a Union fort established in 1864 near Petersburg, Virginia. Although the vast majority of Union soldiers voted for President Abraham Lincoln in the election of 1864, there were many who did not. Jacob O. Wilson who was a private in Co. H of the 198th Pennsylvania Regiment, supported Gen. George B. McClellan for president. Wilson made his opinion very clear in this letter to his uncle, Samuel Thomas. Illustrating his letter with a cartoon drawing of a marching Old Abe, the young soldier wrote, "I will let them know that I will not vote for Old Abe ... one thing I want you to do and that is do all for little Mac that you can for if he is elected I think this war will soon be over but if Old rail splitter goes in then look out for I believe they can stand it to fight as long as we can."; Jacob O. Wilson (1840-1892) of Fishing Creek, Pennsylvania was a Union soldier serving with Company H, 198th Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1 Division, 5 Army Corp. during the American Civil War. He was mustered in September 1, 1864 and mustered out on June 6, 1865. He is buried in Dodson Cemetery, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
