Description

This political cartoon was published in the Judge magazine, a weekly satirical magazine published in the United States from 1881 to 1947 and a competitor to Puck magazine. The editor aligned the Judge with the Republican party. This two-page cartoon features five former United States presidents each holding a sign with a statement of the effect of his presidency. The first and largest figure is President George Washington, with President Abraham Lincoln placed next and shown slightly smaller, then Ulysses S. Grant in uniform and again slightly smaller, then President Benjamin Harrison, and finally President Grover Cleveland. The sixth person and smallest shown is William Jennings Bryan, the Democratic presidential candidate in 1896. The artist's printed signature is in the lower right corner of the image with the title printed in the lower margin at the center.
