Description

This cacheted cover commemorates the Lincoln Car used by government inspectors for an inspection trip on the newly built Union Pacific Railroad, on September 11, 1866. On the left half of the envelope, the cachet printed in dark blue and silver-colored ink depicts the Lincoln Car. The title printed above the cachet reads "Seventy-five Years Ago, on September 11, 1866, Government Directors Made an Inspection Trip Over The Union Pacific from Omaha to Kearney." The caption below the cachet is "The Lincoln Car." A postmark reading "Kearney, Nebr., Sep 11, 1941, 11:30 AM" is stamped on the upper center of the envelope. The envelope is addressed to Lincoln Nat'l Life Foundation, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Tucked inside the envelope is a tan-colored folder which contains explanatory text by Theodore S. Charrney on the history of the Lincoln Car. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
