Description

This cacheted cover commemorates the 75-year anniversary of the burial of President Abraham Lincoln in Oak Ridge Cemetery on May 4, 1865, in Springfield, Illinois. On the left half of the envelope, the cachet printed in gray and dark blue ink depicts the receiving vault at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The title printed above the cachet reads "Seventy-five years ago, on May 4, 1865, Abraham Lincoln's Body Was Interred in the Receiving Vault at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield." The caption below the cachet is "The Receiving Vault, Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Springfield." A postmark reading "Springfield, Ill., May 4, 1940, 9 AM" is stamped on the upper center of the envelope. The envelope, edged with a black mourning border, is addressed to Lincoln Nat'l Life Foundation, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Tucked inside the envelope is a tan-colored folder which contains text by Theodore S. Charrney describing the aftermath of Lincoln's death.
