Description
This cacheted cover commemorates the centennial anniversary of the Young Men's Whig Convention held at Springfield, Illinois, on June 3-4, 1840. On the left half of the envelope, the cachet printed in dark blue and green ink depicts the Springfield Art Association building, formerly the home of Dr. Thomas Houghan where a huge barbecue was held on the afternoon of June 4th, a climax of the Young Men's Whig Convention. The title printed above the cachet reads "One hundred years ago, on June 3, 1840, the Young Men's Whig Convention Was Held at Springfield. Abraham Lincoln Was a Prominent Figure at the Convention" The caption below the cachet is "Springfield Art Association, Formerly the Home of Dr. Thomas Houghan." A postmark reading "Springfield, Ill., Jun 3, 1940, 1:30 PM" is stamped on the upper center of the envelope. The envelope is addressed to Lincoln Nat'l Life Foundation, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Tucked inside the envelope is a cream-colored folder which contains explanatory text on the convention by Theodore Charrney.
