Description
This cacheted cover commemorates the centennial anniversary of the nomination of Abraham Lincoln as a candidate for the Illinois Legislature at Springfield, Illinois, on March 14, 1840. On the left half of the envelope, the cachet printed in green and gold-colored ink depicts Abraham Lincoln with other delegates at the 1840 Sangamon County Whig Convention. The title printed above the cachet reads "One hundred years ago, on March 14, 1840, Abraham Lincoln was nominated a candidate to the Legislature by the Sangamon County Whig Convention at Springfield." The caption below the cachet is "Abraham Lincoln and a Group of Delegates." A postmark reading "Springfield, Ill., Mar 14, 1940, 6:30 AM" is stamped on the upper center of the envelope. The envelope is addressed to Lincoln Nat'l Life Foundation, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Tucked inside the envelope is a tan-colored folder which contains text by Theodore Charrney describing the political influence of the Whig "Junto" at the 1840 Whig convention. Lincoln among others was a prominent member of the "Junto." Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
