Description

This lithograph depicts head and shoulders portraits of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in oval-shaped frames. Depicted between the portraits are a patriotic eagle with wings spread and an allegorical figure seated holding a balance scale and a sword. On the viewer's left side of Washington's portrait is the year "1776" just outside the oval, a furled American flag is shown below the date, and in the lower left corner of the print a British soldier is shaking hands with a Continental Army soldier indicating the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783. In the viewer's upper right corner is the year "1864" and in the lower right corner of the print are two African American soldiers shaking hands while one holds up an American flag. At the bottom edge of the print is an image of the Capitol Building in Washington, D. C., and a banner that reads, "Champions of Liberty." ID number 71.2009.081.1426 is a duplicate.
