Description

This cacheted cover commemorates the 75-year anniversary of the death of President Abraham Lincoln on April 15, 1865, at 7:22 A.M. On the left half of the envelope, the cachet printed in gray and dark blue ink depicts the Petersen House in Washington, D. C., the building to which President Lincoln was carried after being shot by John Wilkes Booth. The title printed above the cachet reads "Seventy-five years ago, on April 15, 1865, Abraham Lincoln died at 7:22 A.M. at the Petersen House in Washington." The caption below the cachet is "The Petersen House on Tenth Street in Washington." A postmark reading "Washington, D. C., Apr 15, 1940, 9-A.M." is stamped on the upper center of the envelope. The envelope, edged with a black mourning border, is addressed to Lincoln Nat'l Life Foundation, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Tucked inside the envelope is a tan-colored folder which contains text by Theodore S. Charrney describing the events occurring between the shooting and the death of President Lincoln.
