Description
This postcard features an illustration drawn by artist Lloyd Ostendorf of seven of the group of nine men representing Sangamon County in the Illinois General Assembly. They are depicted at their victory banquet to celebrate their successful efforts in getting the Illinois State Capitol moved from Vandalia to Springfield, Illinois, in 1837. The nine men, who were all over six feet tall and shared similar political views, were known as "The Long Nine." The reverse is divided in half vertically with descriptive text on the left half along with a note reading "1st day of issue, Aug. 3, 1978, at Long Nine Museum Post Office, Athens, Illinois." The right half has a 10 cent postage stamp and a circular postmark. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
