Description

This postcard features a photograph of the Long Nine Museum in Athens, Illinois. This museum honors the work of Abraham Lincoln and eight other legislators who represented Sangamon County in the Illinois General Assembly during the 1836-37 legislative session. All of these men were at least six feet tall and shared similar political views and who successfully worked to have the seat of government moved from Vandalia to Springfield, Illinois, in 1837. The reverse of the card is divided in half vertically. There is descriptive text at the top of the left half as well as a note reading "1st day of issue, Aug. 3, 1978, at Long Nine Museum Post Office, Athens, Illinois." A 10 cent postage stamp and a round postmark are on the right half of the reverse. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
