Description

This broadside features a photograph of President Abraham Lincoln taken on February 5, 1865, in Washington, D. C, along with a quotation concerning his attitude toward alcoholic beverages attributed to him by former Illinois Governor and United States Senator Shelby M. Cullom. Lincoln is said to have made the statement "when he and other members of a committee of Springfield citizens called at Lincoln's home after he had been nominated for President, to discuss arrangements for receiving the committee on notifications." Lincoln supposedly said, "Boys, I never had a drop of liquor in my whole life, and I don't want to begin now." Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
