Description
This postcard features the heroic-sized statue of President Abraham Lincoln and his son, Tad, located in Des Moines, Iowa, on the grounds of the State Capitol. Done from a photograph taken of Lincoln and his son on February 9, 1864, President Lincoln is depicted seated in a chair with his shawl hung over the back. Tad is standing beside the chair on his father's left. Both are depicted looking at a book held on the President's lap. The statue rests on a pedestal with "Lincoln and Tad" engraved on the front. Fred Torrey sculpted President Lincoln. Mrs. Mabel Torrey, a specialist in child sculpture, created the idealized statue of Tad. A white border surrounds the image. The postcard reverseis divided. "First Annual Lincoln & Tad Pilgrimage, Des Moines, Iowa, May 6, 1962" is printed on the left side. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
